Nancy Haley Appelblatt, M.D., F.A.C.S., Sacramento ENT

A dedicated and energetic physician who is board-certified in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery with and additional board certification in Adult and Pediatric Sleep Medicine, Dr. Nancy Appelblatt has been practicing medicine in the Sacramento area since 1983. Dr. Appelblatt has received extensive regional and national recognition for her skills as an otolaryngologist. She was voted “Top Otolaryngologist” numerous times by her peers (Sacramento Magazine) in 2001, 2003, 2005, and 2007, and has also been recognized nationally in “Best Doctors in the U.S.” (2006, 2008 and 2009). The Sacramento Business Journal recognized Dr. Appelblatt as one of its "2010 Women Who Mean Business". Dr. Appelblatt has had an abiding interest in the medical and surgical treatment of sinusitis ever since she was Co-Director of one of the very first endoscopic sinus surgery courses in the United States (University of California, Davis, 1985). Her clinical interests include etiology, diagnosis , medical and surgical treatment of sleep disordered breathing (also known as Obstructive Sleep Apnea) and other sleep problems in children and adults, diagnosis and treatment of allergy (including sublingual (oral drops) and subcutaneous (shots) immunotherapy), food allergy , reflux, eosinophyllic esophagitis, and infectious disease in ENT.

In addition, Dr. Appelblatt is a well-known speaker who lectures locally, regionally, and nationally to the public and to fellow professionals on various otolaryngology topics. She has been invited as faculty at multiple courses, many that teach sinus surgery to other otolaryngologists (University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, University of Nevada, Reno, University of Southern California, Stanford University, and in Scottsdale, Arizona) (Calsinus.com). Her lecture style has been described as “a surgeon, who thinks like an internist, with a sense of humor.” Dr. Appelblatt has taught family practice residents since the late 1990s. She is an Adjunct professor in Speech Pathology at California State University Sacramento, and co-teaches a graduate course there. She treats adults and children, and even occasionally, legislators. She was instrumental in bringing balloon sinusotomy to Mercy Hospitals and Sacramento. She is working on a project to develop a laser for sinus surgery and is the Principal Investigator in the Clinical Research Unit at SacENT. Since 2005, Dr. Appelblatt has served as of Chief of Otolaryngology at Mercy General Hospital. She is Secretary/Treasurer of the Medical Staff, as well as a member of the Medical Executive Committee. She is a Fellow with the American Academy of Sleep Mediciine.

During her three years as an undergrad at Michigan (UM), Dr. Appelblatt worked as a resident advisor in the dormitory, performed basic and clinical cardiovascular research that was published, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with Honors in Human Biology. She presented her research at the primary Cardiology meeting (ACC), which was her 1st airplane flight to California (that is why she knows about the "E” ticket). She went on to attend medical school and complete her residency in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Dr. Appelblatt practices at Sutter Medical Center and Mercy Medical Center but prefers to keep her patients out of all hospitals. She is currently a member of multiple medical and subspecialty organizations and serves on various committees.

She has three grown (most of the time) children who are the lights of her life and two German Shepherds who are knuckleheads, and still thinks ENT is fun almost every day! In her free time, Dr. Appelblatt enjoys spending time in Lake Tahoe, gardening, and reading almost anything. Her favorite quotes include the following: “Don’t go to sleep; too many people die there” (Mark Twain), and her own phrase, “Q-Tips are an instrument of the devil.” She advises patients when they come to visit her to please bring all of their records and not to arrive too early and bring a book or some work to do. In her experience, medical practice can be unpredictable.
