Dr. Nancy Appelblatt discusses with KCRA Channel 3 News a segment of the population in whom sleep apnea is often not properly diagnosed

Sacramento ENT offers both diagnosis and treatment for sleep-disordered breathing that is efficient and tailored to each patient’s anatomy and degree of disease. At SacENT, comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for both children and adults with sleep related disorders are provided. We offer home sleep testing (HST) to appropriate patients. Home sleep studies have been found to correlate closely with a full attended sleep study in a sleep lab for about one tenth the price. They are covered by Medicare and most insurers.

Ear, nose and throat physicians routinely assess the upper airway, which is where sleep apnea originates. Nancy Haley Appelblatt, MD, FACS, FAASM, is one of less than five hundred ENT physicians nationally who are board certified in both ENT and Sleep Medicine. She teaches other sleep doctors how to examine patients for sleep-related disorders, and has been active in the field for twenty years. Dr. Appelblatt is also available to consult with physicians and patients on other sleep-related issues. These include insomnia, irregular sleep-wake cycles, circadian disorders related to age and work schedules, restless leg movements, reflux, and problems with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment and bi-level positive airway pressure (BIPAP) treatment.

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), in which positive air pressure is applied through a mask to prevent the airway from collapsing, is usually the first treatment for sleep apnea. As the success of CPAP has been found to correlate closely with the degree of nasal problems a patient has, it is very appropriate that any conditions such as sinusitis, nasal obstruction, reflux, and allergy are both diagnosed and treated at the same time. Oral appliance therapy and surgical interventions are offered as needed. These range from minimally invasive treatments of the palate and turbinates to full surgery.

If you, your child, or your bed partner experience or are diagnosed as having chronic fatigue, depression, loss of libido, snoring, high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation, stroke, heart disease, memory problems, attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or excessive sleepiness, please call our office for a consultation with one of our physicians. SacENT will efficiently diagnose your sleep disorder and will recommend a comprehensive treatment plan for you that will allow you to improve the quality of your sleep, your life, and your overall health.
